Dead-set brilliant. Stunning. Clever. Emotive. Words don’t really describe how well shot and cut ‘Shut up and play the hits‘, the documentary of LCD Soundsystem’s farewell show at New York’s Madison Square Garden is. You just have to see it.
I was lucky and and unlucky to have photographed James Murphy, Nancy Whang & Pat Mahoney of LCD Soundsystem on their first tour to Australia in 2008.
Lucky, because at the time, I’d never heard their album and I left the job educated on this phenomenal talent that is James Murphy and his band.
Unlucky, because my camera had been smashed by a drunk punter the night before at Unkle and I was shooting on a backup body and a borrowed Canon with terrible unfixed aperture lenses. So, I was a year into my career, still green, with unfamiliar cameras, f5.6 lenses and nightclub low lights. It was the perfect storm and the resulting images are rubbish.
But, as I’m in a warm and fuzzy mood post MIFF screening of ‘Shut up and play the hits’ – I’m going to share one of my photo shoot fails.
