Corporate portraits can be cool

Mujtaba - REA Group

This series was photographed for REA Group. I shot over 150 portraits and it included staff from the CEO to the folks in the call centre, from the coolest nerds in the world who build the Group’s websites to the shiny Sales folk. REA Group is proof that large multinationals can be cool.

A backyard wedding

Not just any backyard wedding, the perfect backyard wedding. Wendy & Rob were married in August. In near impossible to find August sunshine.

One fine day in Abbotsford, a boy rowed his girl down the Yarra…

abbotsford-convent-engagement-photos-29

This job was honestly in my top three working highlights for the year. When Alex asked me to photograph his proposal to his now-fiance Mel, he had been planning this event for a long time. It started 6 months earlier when he purchased a run-down vintage row boat and proceeded to refurbish it in the […]

Portraits of property dreams

business-portraits-1-150x150

I love portraiture. I love businesses who embrace real portraits. REA Group, owner of Australia’s no.1 real estate portals realestate.com.au and realcommercial.com.au commissioned a series of portraits of business owners to illustrate their business purpose of helping people live their property dreams. These are my favourites so far.

Some kids are just cool

A modern rockabilly wedding

rockabilly-wedding-melbourne-2-150x150

Thank-you wedding photography gods. Thank-you Jet & Steve for inviting me along for your wedding day joy-ride. This day was awesome. Jet & Steve’s wedding ceremony was held at Collingwood’s Darling Gardens and wedding reception was held at one of Melbourne’s great live music supporting venues, The Grace Darling Hotel. Details of choice for this […]

Childhood Summers

photo of kids on a backyard waterslide

This summer gone was my first exposure to the return of the slip-n-slide. It had well and truly disappeared for a decade, at least in Victoria, with years of drought and water restrictions. This Summer though, I found myself at a 6th birthday party on another 39 degree day and, as in the days of […]

The Block’s Dale & Sophie for Salvo’s Stores

Photo of Dale & Sophie from The Block for Salvo's Stores

Dale & Sophie are genuine sweethearts. I photographed this cute pair from The Block’s 2012 season late last year (within hours of getting off a long-haul flight) for Salvo’s stores social media as part of their Salvo’s Stores ambassadorship.

Kids in the studio

Photo of a mini junior photographer in the studio

I love working in the studio with kids. It makes for clean, minimalist photos that don’t distract from the child’s emotions and expressions. But it’s a challenge – you can only light for a particular space and there’s no telling to 3-year-old to have fun but stay within the lit area. Props help, but can […]

triple j’s Surprise Party 2012

triple j presenter Deacon Rose DJ's triple j's Surprise Party 2012

Triple J sure do know how to throw a party. A surprise party! Returning Aussie, Grace, got the surprise of her life when her best pal and triple j Breakfast hosts Alex Dyson & Tom Ballard surprised her with a homecoming party like no other. The party kicked off at Billboard with celebrity music guests […]

The Peep Tempel tour France

The Peep Tempel's Blake Scott in Lyon photographed by Kate Griffin

I didn’t think I’d get an opportunity to blog at all while on this tour, but thanks to the wonders of free wifi at local cafes on almost every corner, I’m taking the small window of opportunity while The Peep Tempel go pick up their tour van and backline from the hire store in Berlin. […]

Family photos in the studio

Childrens photo in studio by melbourne photographer Kate Griffin

This is my last post a little while – I’m off on tour with one of my favourite bands The Peep Tempel who are vacating Australia for a six week European promo tour. I’l be following the lads for the first four weeks and you can keep up to date with shenanigans and photos via The […]

Father & Son photos

Father & son photo in Melbourne gardens

This is a long photo series but it illustrates the kind of thing I look for when photographing humans, particularly family portraits. It’s the interaction, the connection that most humans can’t fake, particularly with children. It’s this moment when a photo stops being a portrait and starts being a true story of the person and […]

Family photos at Merri Creek

How good are swings? They’re awesome when you’re a kid, a never-ending source of glee and begs to minders of ‘just one more!’. I’d argue that even once you’re an adult and your adult butt no longer fits into the swing, you still have that longing when you wander by them. And then, if you’re […]

A photo shoot with Lara Bingle

Photo of Lara Bingle behind the scenes for Love My Family TVC.

It’s amazing how quickly you forget the photo shoots that have passed, almost as soon as you move onto the next one. This session with Lara Bingle was barely two years ago and I’d all but forgotten it’d ever happened until I caught the opening credits for her new reality TV show Being Lara Bingle […]

I’ll never get tired of kids birthday parties

Photos of a rainbow-themed kids birthday party

Cake, streamers, dress-ups, balloons, smiles – how can you not love days like this? Happy Birthday, Alice!

Sometimes kids or family portraits get cancelled at short notice

Child with a bumped head by Melbourne photographer Kate Griffin

Sometimes kids or family portraits get cancelled at short notice and it’s often families with young children. Occasionally, it’s sickness related but more often than not it’s due to physical damage – just like this…..there’s just nothing you can do when kids decide to use their faces to break a fall….poor Darcy.

The Box Rockets are breaking up

Band Photos of Box Rockets by music photographer Kate Griffin

Melbourne band Box Rockets are calling it a day. Well, that sucks. But they are putting on a last hurrah on May 25th at The Cornish Arms in Brunswick. You should all come and have one last party with them.   I met drummer, Pam Zaharias, guitarist, Andrew Campbell, vocalist, Luke Sabbadini and bassist, Stuart […]

The Peep Tempel ‘Mister Lester Moore’ video clip shoot

Shooting stills for TVC’s and video promo’s is one of my favourite parts of my job. Despite the long hours and lack of time with the talent one to one, all the prep work and lighting is done and it’s much like shooting a big concert or a wedding; You wait and watch for the […]

Rich Davies & The Devils Union album art

Photo of Rich Davies for The Devils Union album cover. Image by Kate Griffin

This guy. Words fail me at the best of times but with Rich Davies words don’t seem enough to describe his music and in particular his live performance (be prepared for a half naked Scot singing his way through the crowd), so I’ll leave it to the pros at Beat, Unpaved, and Tone Deaf. But […]

Rock style family portraits

A kids portrait by Melbourne photographer Kate Griffin

The best family photos are often a little left of the traditional family portrait. The Nicholls family threw a rockstar themed 5th birthday party for their son, Bastian, (complete with full band setup in the garage and fliered wall in the bandroom) and took the opportunity to get some slightly different family portraits.

An Autumn Wedding in Malvern

Photos of a Wedding in Malvern by photographer Kate Griffin

Last month, I had the pleasure of playing second photographer on a wedding shoot with friend, fellow photographer,  and web designer extrordinaire CC Hua. It’s the first time I’ve had the opportunity to be the Second shooter; I’ve used Second photographers with my own wedding clients and I’ve always envied their role – I perceived it […]
